It’s also the sister vineyard to Bien Nacido, so it too is farmed with same doting attention to detail. The site consists of a series of gently rolling hills of sand next to Highway 101, at the western edge of the appellation.

Adam Tolmach, The Ojai Winemaker

This intriguing site is located west of all other vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley and is planted with the latest Dijon clones of pinot noir and chardonnay. Although it isn't situated in a particularly beautiful spot, this vineyard has all the attributes necessary for great wine. The soil is both poor in nutrients and well drained, so the vines grow with a decided lack of vigor-a necessity for quality wine grapes. And the cool climate this far west in the valley allows the pinot noir to retain nuanced aromatics and acidity.

The 2004 pinot noir Solomon Hills possesses the lush fruit-forward style of this hot vintage: however it manages to present exotic complexities and great delineation of flavors that only a cool, ideally situated vineyard can produce. I can tell you honestly that this wine will not disappoint!

91 CellarTracker

I wish I had more of this wine, which I do not, so that I could try it again, because this bottle puzzled me. My guest liked it much more than I did, and, as another reviewer has mentioned, it does not have classic Pinot Noir characteristics. Instead, its aromatic and flavor profiles seem like an amalgam of different medium-weight red wines. It is rather dark blood-brick, with a medium+ body, a pleasing mid-palate, and an almost too sappy, bittersweet finish. The aromas that others found compelling seemed muted to me, but it does have raspberry, sweet citrus and mint. Based on this bottle I cannot tell if it is in sharp decline or if it is just evolving into the next phase of a glorious Burgundy-like life. As I said, this wine puzzled me. 9/2/2020
