Knebel, Winninger Rottgen, Alte Reben, Riesling Spatlese 2002
Since 1996 this small 7 ha estate has been on the shortlist of hot producers in the Mosel and was recently elevated to 4 out of 5 stars by the Gault Millau, Germany's most influential wine publication.
These wines are rarely seen outside of the Mosel and Germany's top restaurants.
There are no points, no reviews, just us German wine fans telling you that this is about as fine as Riesling gets. This Spätlese hails from Winningen near the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine rivers in the Röttgen, an ancient steeply terraced vineyard of weathered red slate. The yields are low and the wine zesty and concentrated, with mineral zing to match the explosive nose of wild strawberry, bosc pear, spiciness and smoke.
