Saxum, Paso Robles, Bone Rock, James Berry Vineyard, red 2015 (1.5L)

There are a scant four barrels of the 2015 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock (97% Syrah and 3% Roussanne), and my money is on this meriting a triple-digit rating in 3-4 years. Incredible notes of crème de cassis, caramelized cherries, cedarwood, salted meat, and loads of flowery incense flow to a full-bodied, powerful, yet seamless red that does everything right. It’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise for 15 years or more. 98+ (10/2019)

Black and blue fruit preserves, incense, exotic spices and a pungent floral quality on the hugely perfumed nose. Densely packed, palate-staining cassis, cherry liqueur and blueberry flavors are complemented by violet pastille, spicecake and cola nuances and supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Delivers a compelling blend of richness and energy and finishes extremely long, sappy and pure, with resonating floral and spice qualities and steadily building but harmonious tannins. (JR) (2/2020)
