Thierry Germain, Domaine Roches Neuves, Saumur Blanc, Clos Romans 2016
Description
It was in 1992 that the young Thierry Germain left his native Bordeaux to settle in the Anjou region. He thus took over the Roches Neuves estate , founded in 1850 and established in Varrains , near Saumur , in the Loire . Considered one of the greatest winegrowers of his generation, Thierry Germain creates single-plot vintages reflecting with extreme precision the identity of the grape varieties grown on the estate and the chalk, tufa and sandy clay terroirs of Anjou.
The Roches Neuves estate today extends over an area of 23 hectares of vines grown organically and biodynamically, certified Ecocert and Biodyvin. The soils are worked using a horse and the vines maintain a natural grass cover. The Clos Romans cuvée comes from a selection of vines located in Souzay-Champigny, on a clay-limestone terroir with clayey sand resting on Senonian limestone.
93 points Cellar Tracker
The Roches Neuves approach to chenin is always artistic and individualistic. This wine is no different. Closed at first with a steel backbone of acidity, eventually minerality, fruit, and some delicious funk emerged. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses in the years to come.
