Strong and soft spoken, Pascal Agrapart has been working like this since 1984, well before today’s grower Champagne boom. Peter Liem compares his reputation for outstanding Côtes des Blancs wines to that of Anselme Selosse. Farming is intended to sync with natural cycles, and only indigenous yeast is used, capitalizing again on each plot’s unique terroir.
The house is based in Avize, in the Côtes des Blancs, and unsurprisingly focuses on Chardonnay. Agrapart creates terroir-driven and focused wines of great minerality and complexity, from plots chosen specifically for each cuvée. The farming is intuitive and meticulous; the work in the cellar is equally painstaking.

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is positively brilliant. Citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and mint are all finely sketched in this super-expressive Champagne from Agrapart. Readers who want to get a sense of what the Agrapart Champagnes are all about without investing in some of the higher-end bottlings will want to check out the Terroirs. Weightless and chiseled in the glass, with pedigree to burn, the Terroirs is flat-out stunning, not to mention a fabulous wine in its peer group. The Terroirs is sourced from parcels in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry.

Disgorged in April 2019 with four grams per liter dosage, Agrapart’s NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is a blend of 40% 2015 and 60% 2014 and derives from old vines that are around 50 or 60 years old. Mingling notes of citrus oil and white flowers with hints of crushed chalk and rock salt, it’s medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive, with a satiny attack that segues into a ripe and vinous but chalky, tight-knit core
