Charles Richard may have been a bit before his time. He bought the Bellerose Vineyard with his wife, Nancy, in 1978 - 42 acres in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley. He raised his steep, hillside vines with the help of Belgian draft horses, adhering to the ideals of sustainable agriculture while most wineries were investing in technology and synthetic fertilizers. His wines, from the beginning, were Old World in style.
