Domaine André Francois, Collines Rhodaniennes, Quinet, Rouge 2021
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2021 Domaine André François IGP Collines Rhodaniennes "Quinet" Rouge is a beautiful example of classical Northern Rhône Syrah from a cooler, highly traditional vintage. Grown on sandy, decomposed granite rock (arzelle) just outside the formal boundaries of Côte-Rôtie, this 100% Syrah is sourced from a tiny 0.35-hectare parcel of vines originally planted in 1975.
Unlike the solar, warm 2018 vintage, the 2021 growing season across the Northern Rhône was much cooler and more legacy-minded. This shift resulted in a lean, crunchy wine packed with pure red fruits, savory nuances, and textbook granitic drive.
• Nose: Deeply gamey, meaty, and classic. It punches well above its weight class, leaping from the glass with striking aromas of fresh violets, wild red berries, cracked black pepper, a whiff of woodsmoke, and dusty earth.
• Palate: Heavily driven by the distinct 2021 vintage profile—lean, bright, and incredibly juicy. Primarily red currant and sour raspberry fruits fill the mid-palate, anchored closely by elements of licorice, granitic stone, and raw meat.
• Structure: This vintage carries a serious, tightly wound tannic skeleton reminiscent of a classic Cru Bourgeois. It shows high natural acidity and healthy, grippy tannins that need a bit of patience or air to fully unravel. After breathing for several hours, it softens beautifully into a lush, incredibly cohesive mouthfeel.
• Meticulous Vinification: The grapes are fully de-stemmed and undergo a three-week concrete vat fermentation. Following traditional methods, the wine is aged for 24 months in older 228-liter oak casks (5 to 10 years old) previously used for their Côte-Rôtie, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
• Drinking Window: While younger, warmer vintages of Quinet are built for immediate drinking, the structured 2021 vintage benefits heavily from cellar age. Drinkers note that it rewards an additional 3 to 5 years of aging from release to fully resolve its dense tannin structure. If you are opening it soon, a 2 to 3-hour decant is highly recommended.
