The 1983 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie represents an exceptional piece of Northern Rhône history. Having taken over the family estate in 1980, Bernard Burgaud was only on his second vintage of commercial estate-bottling with this 1983 release.
The 1983 Northern Rhône growing season kicked off with extreme June downpours but transformed into a phenomenally hot, dry summer, resulting in an excellent, highly structured vintage with deep longevity.
• Bouquet: Decades of cellar aging have evolved this 100% Syrah into a deeply savory, secondary landscape. It offers an intense mix of dried dark cherries, leather, mushroom, and iron terroir, backed by highly complex notes of exotic curry spices.
• Palate: Remarkably, well-stored bottles continue to surprise enthusiasts by holding onto an unexpected core of fresh acidity and pulpy dark fruit. It leans medium-bodied with fully resolved, silky tannins and an incredibly long, detailed finish.
• Current Window: At over 40 years old, this wine is fully mature and near the twilight of its drinking curve. While pristine bottles are still vibrant and complex, its longevity relies heavily on impeccable prior storage.
• Anti-Single Vineyard Blend: Unlike many Côte-Rôtie modern neighbors who separate their plots into individual lieux-dits (like La Landonne or Les Moutonnes), Burgaud strictly believes in blending his plots. This 1983 is a unified blend of all his terroirs to achieve a more complete, balanced, and classic regional profile.
• Classic Extraction: Vinification was carried out with restrained extraction and traditional aging, intentionally steering clear of over-oaking to ensure the pure, smoky Syrah fruit takes center stage.
