Francois Buffet, Volnay, Clos des Chenes 1er Cru 2020
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2020 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes" is a spectacular, structurally muscular benchmark expression of one of Volnay’s absolute greatest premier cru vineyards. Benefiting from the highly concentrated, sunny 2020 growing season, this vintage expertly pairs Clos des Chênes' signature calcified, stony density with a deeply pure, crystalline core of dark mountain fruit.
• Vine Age: A true powerhouse blend—the core heart of the wine stems from ultra-historic 80-year-old vines, seamlessly balanced by "younger" 50-year-old vine parcels.
• Vinification: Grapes are hand-harvested. Marc-Olivier Buffet utilized one-third whole-bunch clusters to inject vibrant aromatic lift, herbal complexity, and freshness into the solar vintage.
• Maturation: Aged for 18 months. The old-vine fruit was raised in French oak barriques (1/3 new, 1/3 once-used, 1/3 neutral), while the 50-year-old vine component was aged in concrete to maximize fruit purity.
• Aroma: A deep, beautifully layered nose displaying dark cherries, bergamot orange peel, tart wild cranberries, rose petals, black tea leaves, and a dense, truffle-scented earthiness.
• Palate: Full-bodied, racy, and deeply focused. The mid-palate offers a massive volume of dark red fruits balanced seamlessly by an electric limestone acidity and chalky, powdery tannins that offer immense structural density.
• Finish: Powerfully long and crystalline, echoing with serious mineral energy, spice, and a taut, mouth-watering grip.
Neal Martin, Vinous (93–95 Points)
Heavily praised the wine, noting that it offers dark cherry, bergamot, cranberry, and light earthy tones on the nose. He described the palate as beautifully balanced with fine substance, crystalline red fruit, and "excellent tension and energy on the finish. Superb!"
