Herve Souhaut (Domaine Romaneaux Destezet), La Souteronne, Gamay 2019

I first tried this wine at Lucide in Switzerland. For the lobster course, I wanted a glass of Chablis, but the somm recommended this instead. I thought what the hell, Gamay wouldn't be the worst choice for lobster. To my surprise, it turned out to be one of the best pairings of the night.
This is perhaps the best Gamay I've ever tasted because it has those delicate fruit flavors that you expect from Beaujolais but paired with the intensity of the Northern Rhone. This is a Gamay for, in my opinion, Napa and Bordeaux fans.
The wine is made in the "natural" style with minimal SO2 and unfined, unfiltered but nothing reminiscent of a flawed natural wine. This is certainly within its drinking window right now, and I imagine this pairs well with quite a variety of dishes. Really just a spectacular wine, and I was so lucky to be able to find this in my neighborhood wine shop after returning to the States. 9/27/2024

Continues to drink well. Gobs of lovely gamay fruit. 9/7/2024

This wine continues to gain in complexity. Primary fruit notes are yielding to earthy characteristics. I'm so pleased I have another half case of this. Will continue to give drinking pleasure for another 5+ years. 8/22/2024
