Base of neck or better
94 Points CellarTracker
Drank 1st bottle Aug-2003 ruby red, full fruit with tinge of spice/earth but mostly cherry-plum, balanced with age for plummy finish; 2nd glass of 2nd bottle by coravin 4/17/18 started with big stank that blew off after 10 minutes, was worried for a bit, mentholy earth with great balance and acidity came through, lots of fruit left, lots of body, could last a while longer, alongside 1988, which was also good, this was perhaps 94. 4/17/2018

With wines of this age, it is to be expected that there will be bottle variation. When last tasted in 2003, the bottle was clearly an underperformer and I now question its provenance. Fast-forward 14 years and what this tasting revealed was a very impressive 30-year-old. Opaque garnet, it is packed with earth-laced plum, pipe tobacco, cocoa, leather and espresso. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic and with melted tannins, it stays solid in the middle, shows no heat from its paltry 12.8% alcohol and closes with a very lengthy finish. Comparably cellared bottles should show well for at least another three years. Drink now-2020. 2/24/2017
