The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz, which is aged in both foudre and truncated oak vats, comes from two lieux-dits, Les Cassanets for the Grenache and Les Bedines for the Syrah. It reveals crushed raspberry and kirsch notes as well as a chalky stone-like character, but less of the Provencal roasted herb, lavender, and licorice notes than its siblings. Drink this dense, full-bodied, impressive 2010 over the next 15-20 years. (RP) (10/2012)

The 2010 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is a bigger, richer, more structured wine, and that’s certainly the vintage. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue as well as powerful notes of dark fruits, black licorice, scorched earth, and hot asphalt, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building tannins, and tons of concentrated fruit. It’s just now at the early stages of its prime drink window, and I suspect it will continue drinking nicely for another 10-15 years of more. If you really like your Châteauneuf du Pape mature, give this a few more years. (2/2020)

This is fruit in hyperdrive, with a torrent of crushed blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry flavors rushing along, laced with sweet licorice and fruitcake and driving through the long, very polished finish, where a nice echo of charcoal keeps it honest. Really gorgeous. (JM)(10/2012)
