René-Jean Dard and François Ribo have been making natural wines since 1983. There is a Shakespearean flair to the history of Dard et Ribo: born in towns that face one another across the Rhône, they came together as though making two halves of this place, split by a river, meet. They were fast friends at oenological school in Beaune over forty years ago where they decided to work together on the old Rhône vines of René-Jean Dard’s father and to then vinify sans souffre in a time when this was essentially unheard of; their lower-extraction SO2-free expressions of Syrah bedazzle(d) and belie(d) the general reputation of their labels’ AOCs.

Appearance deep intensity, purple colour. Legs. Nose pronounced intensity, with aromas of dark florals deep red roses and violets, bacon fat meat, dark sauvage earth, black peppercorns, chilli peppers spice, slightly over-ripe rotting fruit - maybe a bit of that banana bojo thing I suppose. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of black pepper, chilli peppers, dark sauvage earth, dark meat, blackberries, hint of fermented vegetables. Long salty bacon finish. Very good quality. Natural style Syrah. More substance and serious punch than the Crozes and St Joseph wines from the Dard Ribo duo. Day 2/3 - Incredibly black peppery spicy and charred meat and finishing with sweet bandung rosewater. 5/21/2021
