Francois Buffet, Volnay, Clos des Chenes 1er Cru 2019
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2019 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes" is a highly regarded, classic expression of one of Volnay’s most famous and celebrated premier cru vineyards. Known for its steep, south-facing limestone slopes, Clos des Chênes typically yields wines that pair traditional Volnay silkiness with a firmer, more structural, and cellar-worthy backbone.
• Viticulture & Terroir: Sourced from fine old-vine plots planted on highly calcareous, chalky marl soils.
• Maturation: Aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels to naturally frame and refine the wine's powerful structural density.
• Composition: Balanced at 13.0% Alcohol by Volume (ABV).

This was very good, like a slightly more serious and adulty version of the 2018. Less juicy fruit and more subtlety. It does have some CO2 but low enough to manage with swirling instead of heavy shaking. It's mild and finessed, mild red-toned fruit flecked with crushed stones and soft, felt-like tannin. Not profound, but satisfying and very drinkable, and at a price point where Volnay just doesn't exist anymore. 4/23/2023

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru offers tertiary red berry fruit on the nose. It’s also quite minty—spearmint—and I find this element a little distracting. The palate is medium-bodied and on the lighter side, but it is well balanced with fine tannins. Perhaps it lacks a bit of grip on the finish and doesn't engage quite as much as its peers. Not unlike some Pinots encountered in Hemel-en-Aarde recently, this is one for drinking over the next decade. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (NM) December 2023
