Francois Buffet, Volnay, Carelle Sous la Chapelle 2021
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2021 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Carelle Sous la Chapelle" reflects a return to a classic, lighter, and highly transparent style of Burgundy. Contrasting against the sunny density of 2020 and 2018, the challenging, cooler 2021 vintage yielded an ethereal, aromatic, and airy wine that emphasizes pure Volnay finesse over power.
• Production Notes: Fully organic farming. In the difficult frost-impacted 2021 season, production was limited to just six barrels. The fruit was 100% destemmed to preserve soft, approachable textures.
• Maturation: Matured for up to 22 months in French oak barrels with minimal racking.
Current Window: 2026 to 2032. Thanks to the site's generous topsoil and the soft nature of the vintage, this is one of the earliest-drinking premier crus in Buffet’s cellar portfolio. It is entering its prime drinking window right now.
Jasper Morris MW (90–92)
Noted its beautiful precision, capturing a delicious mix of juicy raspberry and cherry fruit with medium-plus persistence.
Neal Martin, Vinous
Praised the wine for its elevated fruit intensity on the nose and classic, well-defined style, describing it as highly transparent.
