Francois Buffet, Volnay, Taillepieds 1er Cru 2019
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2019 Domaine François Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds" is a stunning, deeply mineral-driven expression of one of Volnay’s most steep and notoriously rocky premier cru vineyards. Named "Taillepieds" ("cut-feet") because the sharp, jagged limestone rocks historically cut the feet of vineyard workers, this site yields wines with exceptional tension, structure, and intense aromatic complexity.
• Vine Age: Exceptional old-vine architecture—the core fruit is sourced from magnificent 60- to 80-year-old vines that undergo significant millerandage (small, seedless, hyper-concentrated berries).
• Vinification: Hand-harvested and strictly sorted. Winemaker Marc-Olivier Buffet utilized partial whole-bunch clusters during native-yeast fermentation to introduce spicy, high-toned aromatics and herbal lift.
• Maturation: Aged for up to 22 months in classic French oak barriques to polish its tight mineral texture.
92-95 Burghound
A super-floral nose seems to have every floral element in the book including a perfumed hint of gardenia that adds a touch of elegance to the exotically spicy aromas of red and black raspberry. The pure and almost painfully intense flavors are like rolling tiny stones around in the mouth while delivering outstanding depth and persistence on the overtly austere, serious and compact finale that leaves zero doubt that this beauty is built-to-age. In a word, terrific. Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding! April 2020
92-95 Jasper Morris MW
Grown at the northern end of the vineyard, some whole bunches included. Pale pink purple, then a very elegant nose, lovely cherries with a slight raspberry overlay, perfumed and gracious. Really gorgeous and beautifully balanced. The soil analysis says there is the least limestone of the Buffet vineyards here, the taste says otherwise.
