Ceritas, Santa Cruz Mountains, Peter Martin Ray, Chardonnay 2018
This biodynamically-farmed single-vineyard wine from Ceritas embodies everything we love about Santa Cruz Chardonnay. Notes of ripe pear, dried apricots, and honeyed stone fruit dominate this wine’s vibrant and acid-driven palate. We recommend serving this bottle with roast chicken, creamy pasta, or baked seafood drenched in fresh-squeezed lemon.
Peter Martin Ray sits 1800 feet above the small town of Saratoga. This site dates to the late 1800’s being one of the first Chardonnay vineyards to be planted in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Being perched high above the valley floors, the grapes see more sunshine than our other sites, resulting in thicker skins which bring a savory masculine note to the wine that reminds us of the great Burgundies from Puligny. Dry-farmed, extremely exposed and some of the rockiest soils we work with give this wine character not to be found in our other Chardonnays. Old vines dating back to 1971 have never been irrigated, requiring the roots to search deep into the steep hillside for water and nutrients.
93 points Wine Advocate
The 2018 Chardonnay Peter Martin Ray offers deeper, savory tones on the nose and a very singular character: nori and iodine mingle with notes of crushed hazelnuts, touches of flowers and a core of stone fruit. The medium-bodied palate is rounded and earthy in character, refreshed by lively acidity and finishing long.
93 points Vinous
The 2018 Chardonnay Peter Martin Ray Vineyard is distinguished in this range by a decidedly exotic profile in its fruit. Chamomile, mint, jasmine, sage, rosemary and light tropical inflections give the 2018 its beguiling personality. Like all of these wines, the Peter Martin Ray is restrained in style, but here there is an extra bit of ripeness that comes through. (AG) (1/2020)
