Clau de Nell, Anjou, Cabernet Franc 2015 (by Anne-Claude Laflaive)
"Anne-Claude Leflaive and Christian Jacques purchased Clau de Nell in 2008; Sylvain Potin joined the team as estate manager in 2009.
The property is comprised of 10 hectares (24.7 acres) of vines on a gently sloping hill surrounded by open countryside. The highest point of Clau de Nell offers a glimpse of the Loire in the distance; from here, an uninterrupted view unveils the sky and the river on the horizon, as well as rows of Grolleau, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc. As with Domaine Leflaive, all of Clau de Nell’s wines are 100 percent biodynamic.

Beautifully fresh in its purple color, the 2015 Anjou Cabernet Franc opens with ripe and fleshy cherry fruit on the nose. On the palate, this is a highly elegant, finessed and concentrated red with crunchy but ripe tannins and refreshing mineral acidity that leads to a long and linear finish. This is a concentrated and elegant Cabernet Franc with remarkable finesse. I'd keep it for another couple of years, though, and then you can surely enjoy it for up to two or more decades.

This shares the glorious ripeness of Clau de Nell’s 2015 Vin de Loire Grolleau (also recommended here). Its scents of black cherry and violet fill the mouth in a burst of freshness, clean and lasting. Tannins keep it earthbound, grounded in youthful black-pepper spice. Cellar it, and the tannins and fruit will merge into something beautiful.
