Long one of Champagne's most exclusive luxury wines with only 44 vintages declared since in nearly 120 years is one of those wines often seen, rarely tasted. Perhaps fewer still are those who realize DELAMOTTE is its sister property and has a long aging reputation that exceeds many popular and widely available Champagnes at 3X pricing ( looking at you Krug Vintage Brut). When Salon does not declare the vintage the harvest supports the Delamotte marque.
DELAMOTTE, LE MESNIL/sur-OGER 1985
In the era of MTV, New Coke, and Madonna's dominance of the air waves France's Champagne region produced this remarkably high quality, long aging, Chardonnay vintage (particularly in the more southerly crus) that was spared by frost and benefitted from Indian summer like conditions. Such was the bounty at SALON the prestige label shared its distinctive harvest with its sister marque. I have had the great fortune to have enjoyed both these wines from 1985, with original disgorgement dates, that I would declare them on the level each other. Yes, there are some nominal differences, but I equate these having to do more with each marque's style preferences.
1985 Salon, an outstanding exemplar of top vintage bubbles, will run upwards of $2000/bottle. The Chardonnay must is not put through full malolactic fermentation, as such the firmness deservedly requires age for it to soften. Salon accordingly comes across as regally firm, with tight precision.

1985 Delamotte, Le Mesnil s/Oger, today this wine is showing more broad, round and generous as evidenced by the house style favoring full malo, brioche aromatics, ripe white peach and lemon curd off a freshly baked pie. This is a remarkable example of what the vintage produced and a reminder that most of us do not enjoy enough aged champagne!
