Game, bacon fat, and soy; licorice and violet; blackberry and cassis make for a complex aromatic display in Gauby's 2008 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes. Firm and bright, this offers impressions of chalk and crushed stone as vivid as any you are apt to encounter. There is a multi-layered yet dynamic complexity here exceptional even by the exalted standards of this estate. Crushed stone, peat, humus, garrigue, game, and black fruits accumulate without any sense of weight and the finish here clings with sappy intensity and invigorating energy. A gorgeous old vine blend of 35% Carignan, 30% Syrah, 25% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre that was aged for 24 months in French oak, the Domaine Gauby’s 2008 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes shows how solid the ’08 vintage is as you move southwest from the Rhône valley. Offering up a perfumed, intense array of distilled herbs, resin, bitter chocolate, and cherry pit styled fruit, this medium to full-bodied red has a deft and energetic palate that stays light, fresh, and focused. More than a little impressive now, this nevertheless has masses of polished tannin, and enough structure to evolve gracefully for a decade. (9/2012)
