Olivier Riviere, Rioja, Mirando Al Sur, Blanco 2016
Description

Mirando al Sur is made from Olivier’s oldest vines of Viura, planted near the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. It is named Miranda al Sur (Looking South) because it is aged in used Sherry butts after a whole cluster fermentation in oak vats. Harder to place in a Burgundian context due to the impact of the biologic aging of this cuvée, the wines of Jura might be a better analogy for this wine.
Pale yellow-gold. Powerful aromas of pear skin, orange and chamomile, along with hints of toasted nuts and fennel. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated citrus and orchard fruit, buttered toast and succulent herb flavors that show superb detail and back-end lift. Picks up a smoky mineral nuance on the penetrating finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity. All whole clusters and aged in oak foudres for six months, followed by a year in used sherry butts.
