The 2004 Rostaing Côte Blonde is another absolutely stellar wine, with the vintage’s slightly cooler aspects having produced a classic expression of this great terroir. The beautiful bouquet offers up scents of cassis, nutskin, raw cocoa, black pepper, gamebirds, incipient notes of sous bois and a very complex base of soil. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, pure and gorgeously complex, with fine-grained tannins, lovely mid-palate depth, good acids and lovely length and grip. In contrast to the 2006, which hails from a slightly riper vintage and is really delicious to drink today, the 2004 could use another three or four years in the cellar to let a bit more of its tannin melt away and the fruit to fully emerge from the core and take center stage. It is a beautiful wine that is almost ready for primetime drinking, but not quite there today. (9/2014)

Bright red. Explosive, intensely perfumed bouquet encompasses smoky red and dark berries, cherry, fresh and dried flowers and an intriguing minerality. Deep in concentrated blackberry and raspberry preserve flavors but also boasts superb freshness and clarity. The bright, tangy finish doesn't want to quit, throwing off notes of floral pastille, graphite, tobacco and sweet red and dark berries. The wine's tannins are overwhelmed by sweet fruit. Rhône or Nôwhere 2.0 (Malcolm, NE): This was a real treat after the Gentaz-Dervieux since Rene Rostaing is Marius Gentaz’s son-in-law. While the vineyards that belonged to Marius are now famously part of the Rostaing domaine, that vineyard goes to Rene’s Côte Brune; this is his Côte Blonde and arguably his most famous bottling. This 2004 pours a cloudy ruby with brambles, purple flowers, blood, dust and leather. Slightly rustic which is what I want from Rostaing. I love the individuality and how it paired with the Iberico pork cheek, mushroom ragu with lavender and thyme. Plenty of life left. Drink through 2034+. Merci Matt! 3/7/2024
