The 2009 Vatan Sancerre is one of the ripest examples of the vintage that I tasted from the village of Chavignol, weighing in at a full fifteen percent in alcohol in this year. As folks may remember from the feature on the estate back in August of 2007, Monsieur Vatan has always been a very late harvester, so it is not particularly surprising that the 2009 Clos la Néore would be Herculean in style. The bouquet soars from the glass in a youthful and very ripe mélange of sweet grapefruit, oranges, hard limestone minerality, citrus peel, musky notes, a touch of Chartreuse and orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and beautifully structured, with ripe acids, a rock solid core of fruit, fine focus and balance and absolutely stellar length and grip on the finish.(1/2011)
