This estate makes an incredibly classic, elegant Saint-Emilion. The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 65% new French oak. Coming from a beautiful terroir on the upper plateau, it reveals a deep purple/ruby color as well as perfumed cassis and mulberry fruits intermixed with ample spring flowers, chalky minerality, violets, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it has terrific mid-palate depth, flawless balance, background oak, and polished yet significant tannins. If you want to know what limestone soil gives to a wine, try this! It has the polish and balance to offer pleasure today, yet the cellar will be your friend. This warrants 5-7 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking. 96+ 03/2021

Opened, put into a decanter, then almost immediately poured. On the nose and palate, medium vibrant notes of red, red, red strawberries, raspberries and lesser notes of cherries and red currants (where on earth are people finding so much black fruit? The winemaker-owner describes it as a purely red fruited wine.), earthy minerality and herbality led by sage, saline-black olives (there’s a significant whole cluster component), white pepper, anise and piquant spice. Deep ruby, medium bodied, thick legs. Electric acidity, strong tannins, no heat. VG++ persistence and intensity, VG complexity. My first go with this producer, and this vintage, with the best combination of vibrant fruit and good secondary notes, seemed very open for business. May be a leg up in here somewhere, but this was just delightful at the tasting. Crispy, crunchy and highlighting the savory, as opposed, to the sweet in merlot. Napa cellerage operation #1 has this for $60, and if it’s still there when I next head up, I’m a buyer (I *hate* paying shipping). 95+ 10/23/2025
