Max Geitlinger, Baden, Spätburgunder "Maximal" 2019
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2019 Weingut Max Geitlinger Spätburgunder "Maximal" is an exceptionally rare, cult-status German Pinot Noir from the Baden region. Max Geitlinger, widely recognized as the most famous protégé of legendary winemaker Hanspeter Ziereisen, crafts this cuvée as his top-tier, flagship Pinot Noir. Production is incredibly minuscule—typically limited to just 300 to 350 bottles total.
• Aroma: A highly distinctive and complex bouquet combining classic wild strawberry and sour cherry with unique notes of pen ink, clove, and nutmeg.
• Palate: Strikingly linear, chiseled, and stony. It is medium-bodied, delivering vibrant cranberry and red fruit intensity supported by a powerful acid backbone and moderate, firm tannins.
• Finish: Long, intense, and deeply savory, concluding with complex notes of forest floor, earthy spices, and rocky minerality.
• Stylistic Profile: Acclaimed by importers as a mind-blowing vintage, its extreme stony transparency and weightless concentration frequently draw comparisons to the classic 2010 vintage of Grand Cru Burgundy.
• Terroir: Sourced from premium parcels in Baden where the combination of limestone-heavy soils and a cool-climate framework yields a high-strung, incredibly mineral-forward style of Pinot Noir.
• Vinification: Hand-harvested and allowed to undergo spontaneous fermentation using entirely native yeasts. The wine is gently matured in neutral oak barrels before being bottled unfined and completely unfiltered to maintain its natural raw power.
• Philosophy: Geitlinger likes to adapt the naming conventions of his top cuvées depending on what the vintage yields, reserving the "Maximal" label strictly for years with ultimate structural perfection.
