Chateau Grand Mayne, Saint Emilion 2000
Base of neck
94 CellarTracker
The 2020 iteration of Château Grand Mayne is a blend of 78% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak. From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, it was decanted off of its substantial sediment and serially sampled over the ensuing four hours. Deep garnet in color, it is aromatically effusive of dark plum and cherry fruits that are flanked with note of coriander, allspice, aged leather, truffles, cigar tobacco and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity and seamlessly alcoholic (13.5%), it delivers a flavor payload mirroring the aromas and stays solid on the midpalate. At this stage, the oak and tannins have fully assimilated, resulting in a soft-textured ride from attack through lengthy finish. Comparably cellared bottles will last significantly longer that I previously projected when last tasting this wine in 2016. If you choose to pop the cork at this juncture, be sure to decant the wine off of its sediment and give it an hour or more of air (if possible). Drink now-2035. 7/6/2025
