Formerly Weingut Thorle was known as Winzerhof Thorle; All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2022 Weingut Thörle Saulheimer Hölle Spätburgunder is a magnificent, single-vineyard (Lagenwein) flagship German Pinot Noir from the northern Rheinhessen region. Unlike the estate’s entry-level or "Kalkstein" bottlings, the Hölle (meaning "hell," named for its heat-trapping topography) represents Thörle’s grandest expression of Spätburgunder. Because of its top-tier status, this vintage commands a premium price.
• Aroma: An intensely perfumed, dark-fruited nose dominant in morello cherries, wild forest berries, and blackcurrants, meticulously layered with fine French oak spices, subtle clove, and a distinct smoky complexity.
• Palate: Full-bodied but impeccably balanced with cool precision. It delivers an explosion of pure dark cherry fruit framed by starched, velvet-like tannins that display remarkable density and texture.
• Finish: Powerfully long and focused, concluding with an integrated, mouth-watering salinity and an unyielding, stony mineral edge.
• Alcohol Content: Typically balanced around 13.0% to 13.5% vol.
• Terroir: Sourced from the steep, south-facing Saulheimer Hölle vineyard at elevations up to 220 meters. Surrounded by hills that trap intense daytime heat, the nutrient-poor, heavy limestone-clay soils force the old vines to dig deep, yielding microscopic, hyper-concentrated berries.
• Vinification: Hand-selected and 100% destemmed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts in open cement cuves. The wine is then aged for 18 to 22 months in small French oak barriques to refine its structural frame.
• Philosophy: Bottled without fining or filtering to retain its raw energy and preserve the distinct microclimate of the site.
