A wine that flirts with perfection is the inky and opaque 2009 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes. Coming from L'Ermite, le Sabot, and Les Bessards, and aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, it gives up a heavenly bouquet of crushed rocks, blackberries, leather, wild herbs and earth. Massively concentrated on the palate, with another level of fruit and texture over the 2010, it has brilliant purity, building tannin and a blockbuster finish. There's enough tannin here to warrant hiding in the cellar for 4-5 years, but it should last for 3-4 decades. (JD) 09/2015

This beast has finally been tamed and I suspect will continue to provide considerable pleasure for many years to come. Still a youthful opaque purple, the nose of sweet blackberry confit, spice, earth, charcoal and minerals pour from the glass. Full, soft and round on the palate, the tannins have now mostly disappeared behind the wall of, still quite primary, dark fruit. A long satisfying finish. Well stored bottles will likely continue to add complexity over time. A couple of hours in the decanter is suggested If opening one now. 9/3/2024

Opened and decanted for a few hours. First sips seemed austere and not very interesting. Recovering from a cold so I figured it just wasn’t going to be my night for wine.
Went back to it a few hours later after it had been abandoned in my glass….totally different wine. All the elements of cool climate Syrah that I love with the sun kiss of a warm vintage. Dark brambly fruits, licorice and spices, earth and smoke (the good kind). Wish I had more. At least another decade of evolution ahead for this one. 10/6/2024
