The 2022 Domaine Michèle Luyton Hermitage Rouge is a highly significant vintage for collectors, marking the final vintage ever produced of this elusive Hermitage before the wine disappeared from production. Michèle Luyton’s tiny domain is legendary among Northern Rhône insiders for crafting micro-allocations—often producing only around 1,000 bottles of Hermitage a year—making this final 2022 release a true rarity.
Stylistically, Luyton is celebrated for an incredibly elegant, pure, and "mountain spring-like" approach that stands out in an appellation normally known for brute power.
• Nose: Highly aromatic, complex, and deeply mineral. It shows classic Hermitage Syrah markers including dark fruit (cassis and blackberry), iron, smoky grilled meats, cracked pepper, wild lavender, and fresh violets.
• Palate: Strikingly fresh and pure. It achieves massive power and density but manages it with a silky, velvety texture rather than aggressive heaviness. Expect dominant flavors of plum, crushed dark berries, and a distinct wet-earth terroir footprint.
• Oak Treatment: Exceptionally precise. Luyton uses a highly disciplined approach to oak, integrating just a hint of vanilla or spice that supports the fruit without overwhelming it.
Aging Potential: True to the Northern Rhône "Rule of 15," this Hermitage is built for the long haul. While its immense freshness makes it alluring in its youth, it has the tannic backbone and fruit density to cellar effortlessly for 12 to 18+ years.
