Bodegas Age, Rioja 1939
3.0cm or better; burlap wrapped bottles, one torn label corner; levels established by flashlight
Bodegas AGE (originally founded by Félix Azpilicueta Martínez in 1881) is most famous for its Siglo brand, often recognized by the handmade burlap "sack" (Saco) that wraps the bottle. The burlap sack wasn't just for show; it was originally designed to protect the wine from light and temperature fluctuations during transport.
Bodegas AGE itself was actually formed through a 1967 merger of three historic Rioja houses (Azpilicueta, García, and Entrena), but the Azpilicueta roots from 1881 are what gave it that prestige.
The 1939 Bodegas Age Rioja is a historically significant vintage from one of the foundational wineries in the Rioja Alta region. While 1939 was a year of global turmoil, this wine is often cited by collectors as a surprising survivor that retains elegance and vitality despite its advanced age.
In a 1939 bottle, you're looking at a wine made during the Spanish Civil War era, meaning the resources to produce it were scarce, making its survival to this day even more impressive.
The 1939 vintage in Europe was generally considered difficult due to the outbreak of WWII; however, Rioja has a unique reputation for creating "indestructible" wines that defy standard aging curves. Experts suggest that aging capacity in these classic Riojas came from high natural acidity and extensive time in American oak barrels.
Typically a traditional red blend dominated by Tempranillo, often supported by Mazuelo and Graciano.
