Bouchard Pere et Fils, Bonnes Mares 1999

Still with plenty of red and even purplish hints in color, no browning edge. Initially reticent nose, decanted x 30-45 minutes before pouring at dinner party with superb Cassoulet. Clean, very pinote brambly fruit with secondary notes, some hints of underbrush but still a youthful wine, nothing tertiary about this bottle. Red & black fruits, super palate depth even in the attack, great middle and finish. Subtle suggestions of cassis (but not licorice, tobacco or sandalwood). Abundant extract while still middle weight yet quietly authoritative Bonnes Mares stoniness. A spherical wine with no element sticking out or out of balance. Marvelous, and much better than the 2017 bottles. Can be drunk with lots of pleasure but at least this bottle could easily have gone another decade or more. Ranged 93-95. Sure wish I had bought magnums of this now! January 14, 2023

This is still quite youthful with ever-so-mildly toasty dark berry fruit, earth, wet stone and underbrush-infused aromas leading to rich, full-bodied, powerful and appealingly intense flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of tannin-buffering dry extract that both coats the palate and confers a sappy texture to the beautifully long and still notably structured finish. This may turn out to be even better than my score suggests because while there is not yet outstanding complexity, the underlying material is present that could very well allow the additional depth to develop.
