Thorle, Rheinhessen, Saulheimer Probstey, Spatburgunder 2022
Formerly Weingut Thorle was known as Winzerhof Thorle; All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2022 Weingut Thörle Saulheimer Probstey Spätburgunder is widely recognized as a spectacular, historic achievement for the estate. In what critics consider to be perhaps the finest Pinot Noir vintage the Thörle brothers have ever produced, the 2022 Probstey delivers immense concentration alongside profound, Burgundian elegance.
• Origin: Saulheimer Probstey single-vineyard (Lagenwein), Rheinhessen, Germany.
• Viticulture: 100% organically grown grapes.
• Vinification: Fully destemmed and wild-yeast fermented in open top vessels.
• Maturation: Aged for 18 months in small French oak barriques, then bottled completely unfined and unfiltered.
• Composition: Balanced at 13.0% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) with virtually zero residual sugar (0.9 g/l).
97 James Suckling
Exceptionally high praise, calling out an amazing nose of blackberry fruit, deep smoke, and wet earth complexity. He noted "enormous concentration and massive structure" driven by super-fine tannins that drew comparisons to grand cru Burgundy (La Tâche), finishing with lively acidity, white pepper, and savory notes.
93+ Falstaff
Applauded its elegant, cool, and restrained dark fruit, layered with unique notes of incense, crushed rock, and wild herbs. Described the palate as possessing fine, youthful tannins and a perfect "caudalie" (unusually long, measurable finish).
(Benchmark Vintage) Vinous
Highlighted the 2022 Pinot Noirs as the best collection ever made at the estate, heavily defining the vintage by its sheer finesse, precision, and clarity of fruit.
