Fullish colour. Splendid rich, concentrated, profound nose. Very impressive! Fullish body. Lovely ripe tannins. Very harmonious, simply delicious fruit. A great wine. (CC) (2/2018)

The colour is actually more evolved than I would have expected, a little deeper than the 2000 but not younger. The first elements of the forest floor are showing. Some oak is evident too and a feeling of extra weight. Evidently there was a difference between the two bottles: the other example was clearly younger and fresher, with a burst of very youthful concentrated cherry and bright raspberry fruit. Very clean, no edges from either acidity or tannin and a great future. Retasting later, the sample from the less good bottle has freshened and deepened and become more sociable. (5/2022)

A fantastically complex and still agreeably fresh nose offers up impressively dense and concentrated aromas of mostly black fruit that are blended with an incredible array of spice elements plus discreet hints of earth and game. There is serious size and weight to the imposingly-scaled, rich, intense and mouth-coating flavors that possess outstanding depth, power and stunning length. This is not a particularly structured wine but the sheer complexity and class combine to create a knock out Chambertin, worthy of every accolade reserved for the very best in Burgundy. This is really lovely stuff fashioned in a relatively forward style though one that should be capable of aging for years. Tasted on multiple occasions, including twice in 2016, with consistent notes. This is one of the most complex and developed young vintages of Rousseau Chambertin that I have ever tasted. The nose is deep, complex and aristocratic, but already with secondary notes emerging. Aromas of plums, blackberries, licorice, minerals, violets, developing notes of grilled meats and plenty of vanillin oak soar from the glass. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and seamless, with fine complexity, a solid core, and just a bit more new wood on the palate than is normally the case here. The finish is certainly long enough, and the complexity here is superb, but is this going to be one of the very early drinking vintages of Rousseau Chambertin? I tasted this wine twice within a matter of a couple of weeks this spring, and both bottles showed brilliantly well, but rather shockingly forward. Will the puppy fat peel back in a few months and the structural elements get the upper hand and require some extended cellaring? Only time will tell. 96+ (6/2003)

The 1999 Chambertin Grand Cru has a multi-faceted bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois, desiccated orange peel and wilted rose petals. It simply blossoms in the glass, gaining complexity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, plenty of lift and energy, full of breeding from start to finish. Gentle grip, more youthful than the 1996 yet with the same stature, there is wonderful persistence. Unlike the 1996, this 1999 Chambertin is clearly still in the ascendency, though the bottle drunk in Hong Kong was marginally superior. (NM) (5/2022)
