Domaine Clavel, Coteaux du Languedoc, Terroir de la Mejanelle, Les Garrigues 1994
The "back to the roots" wine, made of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache grapes in concrete vats. A “made in Languedoc” wine, unpretentious and frill-free but with a perfume of wild Garrigue and slightly rough tannins that give the wine enough texture to be enjoyed with food.
Located just a few miles from the sea within the city limits of Montpellier, the 36-hectare Mas de Calage estate on which Pierre Clavel has a long-term lease enjoys a distinctly maritime climate, cooler during the day and night during the peak summer months than spots farther from the Mediterranean. In fact, Clavel adds, the breeze off the sea barely reaches five miles inland before petering out-one of the reasons that La Mejanelle was granted its own appellation within the Coteaux du Languedoc. The flowering in La Mejanelle comes early and so the grapes benefit from longer hang time. The vineyards here are surprisingly hilly. The soil consists of ten feet or so of heat-retaining galets roulets, the same large round stones of Alpine origin that characterize the best portions of Chateauneuf du Pape, underlain by red clay. Clavel, who maintains his home in Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel, at the edge of the Pic Saint-Loup appellation, and ages and bottles his wines there, is in the process of constructing a new cellar that will enable him to do smaller-lot vinifications (he now vinifies in large tanks at the Mas de Calage).
