LEDA, CASTILLA Y LEON, VINAS VIEJAS 1998

Drank from magnum, no decant. Purplish color, darker than expected, no discernible bricking. Nose of dark fruits, some leather too. Medium bodied, plenty of fruit, still fairly tannic and nicely structured wine. Some tertiary elements showing--earth & meat, but leather mostly; the concentration of black fruits was the most noticeable aspect of this wine to me. As I recall, this was somewhat of a modern style wine, with lots of oak and overly extracted fruit--no more. It's mellowed quite a bit, with its elements meshing together very nicely. Bottle was in fine condition, and the wine has held up exceedingly well. Went over well with the halloween crowd. We had a Remirez de Ganuza 98 from magnum right before this one, and it was a nice contrast. The first wine was lighter, fruitier, less tannic and less structured than the Leda. October 31, 2014

Full ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and bitter chocolate. Brooding and extremely backward, with sweet, penetrating flavors of cassis, black cherry and mint; a highly concentrated fruit bomb, with impressive thickness and depth. Still a bit tight on the back end; the tannins coat the teeth. Bodegas Mauro's Mariano GarcÃa is a partner in this venture. (ST) (9/2000)

Beautiful, clean nose of dark fruit, candied cherry, cedar, spice and integrated oak notes. Medium bodied and still fairly tight. Very clean with a long finish. (8/2006)
