Andrea Cortonesi reflects the best of the artisan spirit in Montalcino. The Uccelliera wines are rich, layered and beautifully textured. Cortonesi vinifies his plots in three major subdivisions, corresponding to the altitude of the vineyards on the slope. Partial aging in French oak gives these Brunellos from the southern Castelnuovo dell’Abate district additional warmth and richness. Readers who want to check out the Uccelliera wines might want to start with the Rosso or the Rapace, which is sublime in 2010, a great vintage for Montalcino. (06/2013)

Bought at the winery in 2013. (incidentally, anyone traveling to Montalcino should visit the winery, a super-friendly, low-key, family operation, across the road from Ciacci Piccolomini.) The Rapace is mostly Sangiovese, with a little Merlot and Cabernet mixed in, less expensive than the Brunellos. Also a big, oaky wine, with a rich, rounded character and a lot of alcohol (15%), but balanced by a consistent acidity and an absence of explicit sweetness, though it does have a black-currant fruitiness. If you are offended by oakiness, you should obviously stay away from this wine, but even though we are usually nervous about wines with this much alcohol, we got through this bottle very quickly. The full-bodied, velvety richness of the wine made for a series of satisfying mouthfuls. This bottle was fully ready to drink with a short decant, but the acidity level suggests that it will last quite a while longer. 8/21/2021
