It was Il Poggio vineyard, way back in 1962, that heralded the start of Castello di Monsanto’s journey in wine production, with the first harvest overseen by founder Fabrizio Bianchi. Still to this day, the company’s most iconic bottle, Il Poggio, is the first Chianti Classico to feature the name of the specific vineyard from which it comes. White grapes were removed from the recipe in 1968. Il Poggio is the source – thanks to massal selection – of all the Sangiovese, Colorino and Canaiolo vines in the winery’s other vineyards.
- 90% Sangiovese; 10% Canaiolo and Colorino
- In temperature-controlled truncated conical steel vats with emptying system (Délestage) and pumping over for about 20/22 days
- In 5000 litre Slavonian oak casks for 3 years
- Two years of bottle aging
In 1988, the winter was rather mild with little rainfall. From spring to early summer, the temperature stabilized, but at below average levels.
The abundant rainfall in June affected the flowering and partially reduced production. From July onwards, the summer continued with very hot temperatures and almost completely without rain. The harvest began after a clear and sunny September with significant temperature variations between day and night which certainly contributed to the development of elegant and complex aromas in the wines.

Blind. Gorgeous stuff. Prunes, dates, plum, and fig with an acetic character I associate with aged nebbiolo. Orangeish rim reveals age. Orange liqueur too. Chalky tannin, still quite present. It's really pretty, with earl grey and soy sauce coming through. 3/25/2025
