Even though this beauty is now 20 years into its evolution, it is still a very serious wine that with air displays only moderate secondary fruit development on the gorgeously perfumed, spice and discreetly earthy nose. The robust and full-bodied flavors don't appear to have budged much since my initial review as the supporting tannins are still notably firm on the wonderfully long, palate coating and deep finish. This muscular and overtly robust effort is definitely a big wine and one that should see its 50th birthday in fine form and for my taste, I would advise allowing this at least another 5 to as much as 10 more years of cellar time. However, if you are inclined to try a bottle now, I would suggest giving it 30 to 60 minutes in a decanter first. In sum, this is a beautiful effort that should age gracefully for years. Multiple notes including several recently and save for one bottle that was oddly advanced, my impressions have been consistent. 04/2020

Visite des Lafarge au Québec; 2/26/2025-2/28/2025: Au Hoogan le 26: Le vin est floral, long et profond, d'un équilibre d'école. Superbe.
Le 27 au Monarque: Nez floral avec de petits fruits rouges. L’assurance tranquille du grand Volnay à maturité. C’est puissant et fin à la fois, avec un équilibre déal. Harmonieux et d’une grande classe. 94 pts 2/26/2025

This was good out of the gate and got somewhat better as it opened. Decanted for about 2 hours and it had lovely aromatics, pure fruit, and was a good match with pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce. Had it along side a 2002 Jadot Bonnes Mares. The Jadot was a bit more muscular and complex but I really admired the Volnay’s elegance and purity of expression. Not sure I would pay the current rate on these, but happy I bought it on release. 2/11/2024
