Domaine Paul Pernot, an important seventh-generation estate in Puligny-Montrachet, continues to sell the bulk of the production from its 20 hectares of vines to négociants, the Maison Joseph Drouhin prominent among them. Octogenarian Paul Pernot is still to be found at the domaine on a daily basis—moving pallets when I visited— but it's his sons who are in charge these days. The wine that is bottled under the Pernots' own label is made in much the same way that it always was: whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented and matured for some 11 months, bottled before the next harvest. The house style...is typically fleshy and front loaded, with succulent acids and an open-knit, flattering profile. In my experience the wines neither demand nor especially reward prolonged cellaring, though Pernot wines from the 1970s and 1980s sometimes tell a different story. So readers looking for classic Puligny that drinks well young should give these wines serious consideration.

Exotic aromas of honeysuckle, passion fruit, white peach and pineapple are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The succulent, indeed even opulent, medium-bodied flavors also brim with dry extract before culminating in a sneaky long and mouth coating finish. This very stylish effort also needs to develop more depth, but the underlying material appears to be up to the challenge. (6/2020)
