Sergio Barbaglia, Piedmont, Boca 2012
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2012 Sergio Barbaglia Boca is a masterpiece of neoclassical alpine winemaking from Alto Piemonte, Italy. Managed by Sergio Barbaglia and his daughter Silvia, this tiny family estate is highly celebrated for helping revitalize the historic Boca DOC—a volcanic, high-altitude zone that was nearly abandoned in the 20th century.
The 2012 vintage in Alto Piemonte yielded incredibly expressive, highly structural Nebbiolo-based wines. With a production run of only about 3,500 bottles, this 2012 release has evolved beautifully into a textbook example of mature, deeply complex northern Piedmontese terroir.
• Nose: Rich, highly intense, and deeply savory. It bursts from the glass with secondary notes of worn leather, forest floor (sous-bois), balsamic herbs, wild mushrooms, and dry tobacco, all layered over a core of dried strawberry, blackberry, and black cherries.
• Palate: Strikingly fresh, articulate, and mineral-driven. Concentrated flavors of dark red fruits, licorice, and mint meld seamlessly with the signature iron-like and smoky signatures of Boca's ancient volcanic soils.
• Structure & Finish: Built with massive natural acidity and a firm, dense tannic skeleton. Over more than a decade of aging, the rugged edges have beautifully softened into highly refined, harmonious tannins that lead into an exceptionally long, persistent, and savory finish
