Borgogno, Antichi Vigneti Propri, Barolo, Riserva 1964
4.0-4.5cm
From the personally owned, old-vine holdings of one of the oldest winemaking houses in Piedmont. In fact, the Barolo of Borgogno was the wine chosen for the official celebration lunch of Italy's unity in 1861. Nebbiolo is the "king of wines" for a reason — it can age with the best grapes, especially in great vintages like 1964. Dating from 1761 Borgogno is one of the most historical wineries in Barolo. The underground cellars continue to represent a rare historical memory of the Langa to this day, and the wines are made according to tradition: long spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks without the use of selected yeasts, and long periods of ageing, strictly in large Slavonian oak barrels. Vineyards are culitvatead in Barolo, Madonna di Como and in the Colli Tortonesi.

From a pristine original red-capsule bottle with base neck fill which had been stood upright for 24 hours to allow the fine sediment to settle. Poured clear, the colour of orange pekoe tea. The nose was great right out of the gate with faded rose petals, fresh leather, iodine, sous-bois, Darjeeling and truffles which gained in intensity with time in the glass. A regal palate with aged-fruit, orange peel and some light earthiness all delivered with wonderful tension, freshness and length on a broad mouthwatering finish. Some tannic grip remaining to wind things up. The palate added some weight over the first couple of hours and then started a slow decline around the 3 hour mark so be mindful if considering a decant. This wine was just wonderful. 10/30/2024
