First whiff upon uncorking was alcohol and indistinct frutti di bosco. A very inky garnet in the glass, with even, long legs upon the swirl. It took an hour to open up and settle down, but when it did, enticing aromas of raspberry, kirsch, and frankincense wafted from the glass. Full bodied, the palate held fig jam, raspberry, black cherry, and some licorice on the aft palate. The finish was long, the fruit notes guided by leather and peppery tobacco leaf. My one regret was not waiting the full hour before pouring glasses for the table. It really needed that hour, and then it was truly beautiful and an excellent pairing with our dinner of tri-tip two ways(Santa Maria & Umami/Balsamic marinade), roast potatoes, grilled radicchio, and stuffed portobellos. 9/1/2025

Similar to the base cuvée, yet with more of everything, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes offers smoking notes of kirsch, black cherry liqueur, ground herbs, licorice and big minerality. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, seamless, pure and exceedingly elegant, all while carrying superb mid-palate concentration, plenty of tannic grip and a blockbuster finish. Drink this brilliant 2012 over the coming decade or more. This 120 acres estate, under the leadership of the Maurel brothers and oenologist Philippe Cambie, continues to fashion some of the most profound wines on the planet. (JD) 10/2014
