G.D. Vajra, Dolcetto D’Alba, Coste e Fossatti 2019

For the love of tradition and terroir, Aldo Vaira made the unusual choice to preserve very old Dolcetto vines planted in DOCG Barolo vineyards of Coste & Fossati vineyards high above the town of Barolo. Highly unusual indeed because had he torn up the 100 year old vines and planted Nebbiolo, the vineyard would bring in much more money. Instead, he left the gnarled vines to produce one of the finest Dolcetto available. Extremely low-yielding, approximately one bottle of wine is produced per vine. This wine is deep violet in color and shows a symphony of aromas including cranberry, black cherry, wild flowers and notes of licorice and menthol. The naturally soft tannins of Dolcetto make the wine approachable in its youth, but it will age gracefully due to the sap imparted by the old vines.

92 points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2019 Dolcetto d’Alba Coste & Fossati is laced with wild dark cherry, plum, spice, leather, tobacco, incense and scorched earth. In this vintage, the Coste & Fossati is a bit more aromatic and less weighty than it can be, but it is nevertheless delicious, not to mention one of the most distinctive Dolcettos readers will come across.
