The prodigious 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan boasts abundant notes of acacia flowers interwoven with blackberries, black raspberries, licorice, incense and a touch of graphite. The wine hits the palate with tremendous authority, impressive purity, a skyscraper-like texture and a full-bodied, layered finish that lasts for nearly 50 seconds. Excellent CdP, and drinking really well. Slow ox’d for 3 hours, poured out of the bottle, served with steak burgers (reimagining a leftover grilled NY Strip!) and consumed over 1.5 hrs. Quite an evolution over that period. It was surprisingly medium-bodied and translucent to start, but after it fully opened it was more full-bodied and dark. Garrigue, red and black fruit, spices on the palate, nicely balanced, smooth tannins, integrated oak, long finish. Grenache is aged in concrete and Syrah in barrique. Great food pairing with the steak burgers. In its drinking window for sure, but I won’t rush to open my last bottle as there’s enough fruit here to carry it through several more years at this level. 8/20/2025

Filtered, lots of sediment - poured black-beet color - had a funk damp woodsy nose that wasn't promising. But in less than an hour it had blown off leaving well blended fruit, dried leaves, a touch of floral/lavender? and an interesting warmth thru the palate. Went well with meat and rich cheeses. Have a few bottles left and hope they're as good.
