Littorai, Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyard, Pinot Noir 2016
Received in Original Carton
Hirsch Vineyard lies 12 miles northwest of Jenner, the seaside town where the mouth of the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. It is comprised of a series of ridge tops ranging in elevation from 1,200 to 1,550 feet. This is San Andreas Fault territory, resulting in varied and complex soils. Located only 3 miles from the ocean, the climate can be erratic and unpredictable, with wide annual swings in moisture, temperature, storms and wind. Rainfall is abundant between October and April, with the summer dry and desert-like. Littorai is the longest continuous purchaser of Hirsh Vineyard fruit, starting in 1994. This vineyard is farmed using organic materials and biodynamic methods, not certified.
Very attractive, complex, spice and sous bois-scented nose with bright red cherries and blueberries. There’s a very silky mid-palate that carries a smooth, fleshy and long array of layered red cherries and pastry-like sheets of tannins. (10/2018)
From a site located in the northern part of the Sonoma Coast, the sensational 2016 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard sports a medium ruby color as well as classic dried red fruits, forest floor, spice, and subtle marine/seaside notes. It’s medium-bodied, as elegant and classy as they come, and is going to evolve beautifully. (06/2018)
Littorai's 2016 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard is gorgeous, but it also is going to need quite a bit of time to come together, as the tannins are quite piercing at this early stage. Chalk, white pepper, mint, blood orange and red berry fruit give the Hirsch its distinctive aromatic signatures. As promising as the 2016 is, there is not much pleasure to be found today. Readers should plan on being patient. (AG) 94+ (05/2019)
