Chateau Montrose 2000
Base of neck
98 The Wine Independent
A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2000 Montrose is medium to deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It charges out with ready-to-go notes of juicy plums, black cherry compote, and wild blueberries, opening out to a perfume of candied violets, camphor, rose oil, new leather, and fragrant soil. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and very fresh with soft, velvety tannins and bags of vibrant black and blue fruits, finishing long and perfumed. Gorgeous! (LPB) 02/202

Drank this wine next to other bordeaux and a grange, and this wine was the WOTN. Beautiful ruby in colour. Notes of cassis, blackberry, eucalyptus, and licorice. Med acidity, med body, smooth tannins. This wine was so well balanced. Everything about it was amazing. I am sure it will age beautifully for another decade, but hard to beat now. 1/31/2026

Very top shoulder fill. Only bottom 1/8 inch of cork soaked. No leakage. Slow Ox for 1 hour. Strained into a decanter for 90 minutes, nearly a tablespoon of fine sediment. Back into bottle and slow ox for another 90 minutes. The wine didn't so much as evolve in the glass over an hour or more, it merely transmuted. All of the elements of blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, mocha, dark currant, cedar, tobacco leaf, anise and dried herbs with long, fine, and pliable tannins merely shifting in their dominance on the palate at various stages, as if being put on a gently undulating rollercoaster with the same basket of flavors being gently turned over as you came to each peak and valley. 30 second finish. 1/24/2026
