Jurgen von der Mark, Baden, 'Engertstein' Pinot Noir 2020
All wines purchased upon release, many purchased importer-direct, and all stored in a purpose built redundant temperature and humidity controlled cellar.
The 2020 Weingut Jürgen von der Mark 'Engertstein' Pinot Noir represents another highly consistent vintage of this Burgundian-style Spätburgunder from Baden. Master of Wine Jürgen von der Mark continues his signature style here, leaning into a refreshed, bright profile that focuses heavily on tension, spice, and mineral crunch. It matches the prior vintage in exceptional value.
• Aroma: A faintly floral and heavily spiced aromatic kickoff, layered with notes of lean red berries, sour cherry, elderberry, and dried leaves.
• Palate: Texturally engaging but notably refreshing, leaning into a slightly leaner profile dominated by bright red cherry, crisp medium-plus acidity, and fine, rounded tannins.
• Finish: Clean, lingering, and refreshing with an energetic, herbal backend accented by subtle toasted oak and vanilla.
• Alcohol Content: Typically balanced at 13.5% to 14% vol.
• Terroir: Cultivated on the limestone and clay soils of the Tuniberg hill in Markgräflerland, Baden. This cool, elevated site provides the wine with its characteristic lean volume and tight mineral backbone.
• Vinification: Grapes are hand-harvested from old vines under organic principles. Spontaneous fermentation takes place with native yeasts in open cement tanks for roughly three weeks, followed by 12 to 15 months of cellaring in neutral French oak barrels (10% new wood).
• Philosophy: Kept pure, unfined, and unfiltered to maximize its expressive, cool-climate red fruit character.
