Decanted for an hour+. Perfect fill and cork, heavy sediment. A powerful wine with everything in the right place that should have 5-10+ years of life left. Inky black still at the rim, amazing perfume, modern style with black fruits, some sour orange, plum, drying tannins still in the forefront, iron, tar, licorice, pepper, leather, cedar, touch of balsamic, L finish. This tasted younger than the ‘11 Conterno francia (albeit difft style and still great) that we drank it with. Visited the winery a month ago and tasted the ‘20s so it was cool to see how well the ‘01 drank. 10/23/2025

Decanted 1hr. Like many, I bought my first Barolo's starting around 1999, and like many, they were mostly the higher scoring modernista circa 1999 to 2007 vintages. After 20 years, most have been enjoyable though not as exciting as they were in their youth, or my tastes have changed, likely a combo of both variables. And yet, there have been some superb wines, such as the 01 Altare Brunate and I'm happy to report this 01 Pajana. While not quite at the Altare level, this effortlessly avoids any pitfalls that are seen with age on these wines. Dreamy dark fruit, a multifaceted, hybrid of damson and cassis, fresh, vibrant and very convincing. The greatest hurdle it clears is the non factor of drying tannins, certainly they are there, and its a structured wine for sure, but nothing is really poking out, and all is balance as it should be.
