Faiveley, Latricieres-Chambertin 1999

Dark spicy fruits on the nose and palate. Quite aromatic on popping. The wine is bit brooding, hiding the deeply concentrated dark fruits behind very grippy tannins (think young Medoc style tannins). Blind, would have been hard pressed to peg this as burgundy. Quite enjoyable but not particularly reflective of the terroir. Wine should open up a bit more over the next 5 or so, not sure where the fruit will stand at that point though. 7/8/2022
This is right behind the superb '99 Mazis in quality with its closed and reserved black fruit merging seamlessly into full, firm, structured big-boned flavors that offer terrific complexity and outstanding length. This is sneaky in its intensity and possesses brooding power but it clearly offers grand cru quality flavor precision. This will require at least a decade to unwind and offers excellent aging potential. (4/2002)
The 1999 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is a classic example of the old-school Faively style, still in its infancy despite almost two decades in the cellar. With aeration, the wine offers up aromas of cassis, rich soil, subtle grilled meat and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, richly tannic palate with good depth at the core, great balance and a harmonious, albeit virile, finish. Everything is in harmony; all this needs is another 10 years of bottle age. Anyone tempted to pull corks now should consider decanting, though I would be inclined to simply open 12 hours in advance to avoid the loss of bottle bouquet that more aggressive aeration would entail.
