Mayacamas, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder, Cabernet Sauvignon 1980
removed from Original Carton; high shoulder
Mayacamas Vineyards is among the classic wineries that have made California wines among the world's finest. The original stone winery is a Napa classic. The Mayacamas wines remain extraordinary...they offer a freshness almost unparalleled in Napa, along with an intensity of tannin that can invigorate fans of the valley's classic wines. -Jon Bonne, The San Francisco Chronicle
Mayacamas Vineyards is one of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon producers in the history of California. For those who long for great red wines that cellar with conviction and evolve in the course of time into brilliantly complex and compelling wines, Mayacamas Vineyards remains one of the brightest stars in the constellation of California wine. It is arguably the last man standing from the glory days of California's past. -John Gilman, View from the Cellar
90 points John Gilman
The 1980 vintage of Mayacamas Vineyards cabernet sauvignon is now fully mature and drinking beautifully. It is a very good, rather than a great vintage for this great estate, but the wine is now at its apogee and offers up a classy and compelling bouquet of dark berries, cigar ash, espresso, herb tones, a touch of cumin and a great base of soil. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and very complex, with fine intensity of flavor, good mid-palate depth, melting tannins, sound acids and lovely focus and delineation on the long, resolved and classy finish. Despite most of the tannins having fallen away, the 1980 Mayacamas still retains lovely acidity and grip on the backend. A fine drink for enjoying over the next ten to twelve years. (7/2008)
